Hands-On: Experiments

  1. Calculate the required storage capacity for a music file with a length of 3 minutes and 46 seconds in CD quality. Which methods of compression are available?
  2. Listen to a MIDI file and a WAV file and compare the quality, advantages and disadvantages of both types of recording. How does an MP-3 file sound in comparison?
  3. Work with a Speech Recognition Program (e.g. with Philips Speech or IBM ViaVoice) and investigate its strengths and weaknesses. Test the program with different people (= different voices) and with different texts (= different contents).
  4. Check the different quality of audio using different internet connections: http://www.raum.com/basan/
  5. Experiment on this site: http://www.till.com/articles/PickupResponseDemo/index.html
