Bodyfluids

In: Health from Space Research. Ed: Austrian Society for Aerospace Medicine. 1992; pp. 39-55. Springer-Verlag Vienna New York

We assessed the adaptation and readaptation of fluid, electrolyte, and protein shifts and hormonal changes during and after lower body negative pressure (LBNP) before, during, and after space flight.

The primary goal was to examine the input-output relationship of the body fluid-cardiovascular systems using a stable stimulus configuration. That configuration was provided by the Proteinometer, a sound velocity measuring device designed to measure protein concentration.

Blood tests indicated an increased fluid shift into leg interstitial space early after a 10-day space flight. Endocrine findings indicated an increase during LBNP and postflight and an overall increase in vasopressin during space flight with only a moderate increase from LBNP.
