von Brandon R. Grossardt
Mayo Clinic, Division of Biostatistics / Rochester, MN (USA)

Abstract

The Mayo Clinic is the first and largest integrated, not-for-profit group practice in the world. It comprises nearly 2,500 physicians and 42,000 other health related staff. The main Mayo Clinic campus is located in Rochester, Minnesota, and provides a large portion of the health care to the surrounding communities. One of the lesser known treasures of the Mayo Clinic is the ability to conduct population-based research for Olmsted County in collaboration with all other health providers in the area.
I will describe the role in the research process of the approximately 150 statisticians working at Mayo Clinic. Topics addressed will include As an example, I will use my recent experiences on The Mayo Clinic Study of Oophorectomy and Aging to illustrate the many facets of research. I will give special attention to the topics of epidemiology and study design, as all other aspects of a study are dictated by these topics. I emphasize a very informal atmosphere, and invite all attendees to openly ask questions.
